Former Spice Girls member Geri Halliwell-Horner has joined the cast of the upcoming Gran Turismo movie, the long-awaited adaptation of Sony’s successful racing title. Alongside Halliwell-Horner, Djimon Hounsou is also preparing to take part in the feature adaptation that is slated to open in theaters in August 2023, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Halliwell-Horner announced the news of her joining the cast on her Instagram account. The former Spice Girl is also celebrating the 25th anniversary of her acting career, which was ignited back in 1997 with the musical comedy Spice World. While she has appeared in a number of TV shows, including Sex and the City, Crank: High Voltage, and Geri: Life Sucks during her career, it will be the first time in a long time for Ginger Spice to get in front of the camera again. She will be joined by Hounsou, who has most recently starred in A Quiet Place Part II. You might remember him from Elephant White, Blood Diamond, and Guardians of the Galaxy as well.

Along with the duo, the cast of the movie also includes Stranger Things star David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Archie Madekwe, Joshua Stradowski, Daniel Puig, and Thomas Kretschman. The upcoming adaptation will follow the story of a teen who is a highly skilled Gran Turismo gamer. Played by Madekwe, the teenage Gran Turismo veteran finds himself on a new path that leads him to become a professional race-car pilot. Hounsou and Halliwell-Horner will take the role of the teen’s parents.

The production of the movie has been in the works for some time now. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the shooting is currently taking place in Hungary. PlayStation Productions’ long-awaited movie will be directed by Neill Blomkamp, who previously directed Elysium and District 9.

It is good news for Gran Turismo fans, as it seems like the racing game will definitely get the big-screen treatment this time. That’s because the first time Sony started pondering on the idea back in 2013, the movie went into development hell and had to be abandoned after five years. In 2018, the entertainment conglomerate wanted to revitalize the idea after achieving success by adapting its best-selling video games into movies and TV shows like The Last of Us and Uncharted. That resulted in Blomkamp taking the director role of the movie along with Jason Hall, who penned the script.
