Keep everyone entertained until the New Year with six low-cost family activities
SPLASHING the cash on festive celebrations leaves us looking for fun on a budget in the days between Christmas and New Year.
Known as Twixmas, it’s the season to save your pennies — so try these low-cost family activities.
FAMILIES GOT TALENT: Add drama to your day with a talent show.
Download the free Ultimate Buzzer app on your phone, give everyone time to work on their act and make one person a judge.
Just don’t go full Simon Cowell — no one wants kids crying into their festive leftovers.
HOST A MOVIE NIGHT: At this time of year, the big channels all compete for our attention — so check out your TV guide and gather the family together to watch a favourite film.

Microwave a bowl of popcorn, pour the drinks and turn off the lights to recreate that cinema vibe, then get settled down for an evening of fun.
TRY A TREASURE TRAIL: Too cold to go outside? Collect any leftover Christmas chocolates as the treasure and plant them around the house.
Parents can sketch clues or come up with riddles and then help children figure them out.
PITCH UP FOR PANTO: Panto is just for Christmas, right? Oh no it isn’t.
Most shows run well into the new year and there are several matinees, some with great last-minute prices.
Check with your local theatre to see what’s available.
GET CRAFTY: Grab the glitter glue, paper and stickers for a morning making thank you cards.
Or, with the King’s Coronation coming in 2023, get kids to make their own New Year tiara or crown.
At youtube.com/@redtedart, you will find a free print-at-home, colour and cut-out paper crown tutorial.
GO ON AN ADVENTURE: Kids still just love going to the park.
But make a day of it by choosing somewhere slightly further away or in a different area.
Take a picnic lunch and then treat the family to dinner at an Asda cafe, where kids eat for £1.
- All prices on page correct at time of going to press. Deals and offers subject to availability.
