SPOTY hero Rob Burrow’s disability van vandalised by ‘scum’ during Christmas meal – leaving his family devastated
HEARTLESS yobs vandalised rugby hero Rob Burrow’s disability van as he enjoyed a Christmas meal with family.
The former Leeds Rhinos and England player was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2019.
Rob, 40, left Brits in tears with his brave battle at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards this week.
His dad Geoff has now revealed how the star’s disability van was targeted by vandals during a family outing in Castleford, West Yorkshire.
He wrote: “Well oh well – my family went out, with my wonderful Son Rob, for a lovely meal at Rockello’s in Glasshoughton Castleford tonight.
“Unfortunately a disgrace of a person decided to scratch all over Rob’s Disability van. How low are some people hey ! Sleep well you scum of a person.”
Fellow rugby stars flooded the post with support – including ex-England ace Paul Sculthorpe.
He told the fuming dad: “Some people have no morals in life Geoff, karma will catch up with them.
“You, your family and that legend of a son just keep showing the way and inspiring Have a lovely Christmas x”.
While former Leeds Rhinos star Barrie McDermott branded the act “horrible”.
It comes after a heartbreaking clip was shown at SPOTY of Rob’s fight with MND before he accepted the Helen Rollason Award.
It revealed how the star, who is now non-verbal and bound to a wheelchair, had his life turned upside down by the degenerative disease.
His wife Lindsey could be seen carrying Rob to bed and to the kitchen so he can watch their children cook.
Mum Irene was also shown feeding her son as he relies more on his family each day.
Rob received the award alongside former teammate Kevin Sinfield, who has raised more than £7million for MND research.
Speaking to the audience, Rob said: “I am inspired to keep going by my friend Kevin Sinfield. The guy who makes the impossible seem possible.
“My family who have put their lives on hold to care for me, especially my beautiful wife Lindsey and my amazing kids.
“Lindsey did not expect to sign up for this but she puts me first and foremost. I am not here without her sacrifice.
“Lastly, to the MND sufferers out there. We will not stop. We will find a cure.”
